Eric Kiel for Pfizer

Eric Kiel ventured to Colorado for a 2 day shoot for Pfizer Equine.  Working with Bader Rutter, Kiel & team photographed over 50 different shots to establish a new image library for Pfizer.   The project dictated some early morning call times...apparently fueled by Fruit Loops for breakfast.

From here, Eric went on to another shoot in Wyoming, and is now in British Columbia shooting for Ski-Doo.
We hope to share those visuals with you after the 1st of the year!

Jonathan Chapman's Target C9 Director's Cut Launch

We're excited to officially launch the director's cut of the Target C9 Active Apparel video.  Shot this past summer on the streets of San Francisco, the video was produced by JCP in collaboration with Minneapolis based Knock Inc.  This version of the edit is a cut-down from the original 9 minute spot currently playing inside the San Francisco's recently opened City Target. Be sure to check out the Video Preview post which offers additional insight into the storyline as well as how the project came together.

For the director's cut, Jonathan worked closely with Chadwick and the team at Splice to pull some select shots and sequences and shorten the overall edit by about 3 minutes.  Our project tapped a broad palette of crew from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Minneapolis to capture the "day in the life" storyline  required to tell the full narrative of the multiple activities that take place throughout an active day on the streets of San Francisco.

It's been quite a year for Jonathan, including recent travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina. 2012 is nearly wrapped and we're already looking forward to a what's in-store for 2013.  On the horizon are many updates to Jonathan's portfolio, website and director's reel, as well as new projects in the works… Yippee!

Carl Tremblay for Golf Digest

With all the holiday ads for cars in your driveway with the "big red bow", we thought we'd post this lovely red Audi A7, shot for Golf Digest by Carl Tremblay.  It may not be ideal golf weather in the Northeast now, but anyday is a great day for a drive, especially in this car!  (It has its own Wi-Fi hot spot).    Too bad the props on this shoot had to be returned!

Jonathan Chapman - From City Streets to Green Pastures

Jonathan recently returned from a shoot for Target in San Francisco, (which we'll be showing shortly) to partner with Colle McVoy on a project for agricultural expert, WinField. The overall process of "farming" is indeed a true "get your hands dirty," experience.  With blue skies, fresh air, and the rolling hills  of Wisconsin farmland, Jonathan created imagery from unique angles ranging from the tops of a grain elevators, down to the level of the roots, & even in the air,  capturing visuals of a crop duster.  There is a true art and level of aerodynamics that these pilots possess!   They even did a fly-over only a few feet from the heads of the crew,  no doubt laughing as they literally, "hit the dirt."

Jeffrey Lamont Brown goes "Probing"

We’ve all heard stories of awful Mondays spent in a cubicles staring at an Excel spreadsheet for hours on end, but Jeffrey Lamont Brown doesn’t believe in that at Tallgrass.

This week they started their Monday doing a very special shoot of Mitsubishi Rayon golf shafts, captured with an Innovision Probe snorkel lens. Sounds a little intrusive, but to give you an illustration of how amazing this lens is: it makes specks of dust appear Godzilla-sized! With a bug’s eye view on these shafts they’re capturing something totally unique from a perspective you haven’t seen before, images coming soon!

Mark Katzman's "Into the Volcano" in the Communication Arts 2012 Annual

From the Communication Arts 2012 Photography Annual – “This short film tells a story about parenting, love and coping with the loss of a child. It highlights a long forgotten photographic process, the oratone, while celebrating the lasting power of photography. The challenge was weaving the threads of the story into a subtle, graceful and elegant film that relies less on facts and more on emotions to carry the message. By combining abstract and evocative moving images with the narrative, the piece takes on the qualities of a visual poem rather than a documentary.” – Communication Arts 387.

Special Thanks to everyone involved, especially Tom and the Townsend family for allowing me to make the film.   www.markkatzman.com

Q&A with Shaun Fenn on Pophoto

A big thank you to Popfoto.net for their Q&A Article with Shaun Fenn

all image © Shaun Fenn 2012

"The technical part is not really the challenging part. At a certain point, we should all be proficient technically. I’ve since gotten back into the meat of the work. I show my creativity by focusing on making the everyday look amazing. The challenge in lifestyle is to take the everyday and turn it into something people will say “wow” to. I’m enjoying this part of the process." -- Shaun Fenn

Carl Tremblay shoots Lori Bruno & Christian Day for American Airlines Mag

Carl Tremblay ventured to Salem, MA to photograph Lori Bruno & Christian Day for American Way magazine.    They two are not wearing Halloween costumes, rather this is the daily wear that they proudly adorn in Day's Salem store, Hex - Old World Witchery.

The shoot proved to be an interesting one on many levels.  While Carl didn't have to ask them to "get into character", it was a bit of a challenge trying to get them to ride tamdem through the graveyard with those robes!  Finding balance, Carl was able to get the shot below, as well as some great portraits of the "witch" & the "warlock" of Salem.

Eric Schmidt & Children's Healthcare of Atlanta

Working with Three Advertising,  Eric Schmidt was tasked with capturing "that moment before a kid gets himself or herself injured" in a sport.  Sounds pretty straightforward, but dangerous at the same time....so for obvious reasons, this one required equal amounts of post & pre-production.  There were design elements in the ads that required compositions within a predetermined frame so a strong pre-visualization of how the compositions would be choreographed was a necessity, as well as casting the right talent.  Eric spent two days with the casting agency, reviewing & giving input on each athlete.

The football & lacrosse imagery involved the players launching themselves from a small trampoline, then landing on a large safety pad.  It was important that their helmet didn't intersect their eyes & that their hands & gear were positioned correctly & unobstructive.

The cheerleading image involved a large trampoline delivered to the set with an assistant on a twelve foot ladder, & a heavy cushion for a "focal point" for the girls on the ground.   Eric's assistant & the talent definitely got a workout in!

This shoot was the 2nd of a series of ads for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.  The soccer image was the very first image of the campaign & the client LOVED it.   Always great when everything comes together with alot of laughter in the process.

Mark Katzman & the Home Depot Foundation

You really do learn something new everyday.  I had no idea that more than 35,000 Home Depot associates are Veterans -- which could be why the Home Depot Foundation holds Veterans close at heart.

In 2011, the Home Depot Foundation had committed $30 million over three years to nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving the homes of economically disadvantaged veterans.  This year, the Foundation is committing an additional $50 million over the next three years in an effort to ensure every veteran has a safe place to call home.

Mark was asked by Idea Engineering in Santa Barbara to photograph a Foundation project in St. Louis that would eventually be used on the website & in their annual report.

Quite an amazing day to witness the spirit of volunteerism.  See more of Mark's work at

Carl Tremblay for Harvard

Carl Tremblay had the pleasure of photographing for the 2nd time, true participants in Harvard Business School's Executive Education Program.  The program draws executives from global Fortune 500 companies who come to Harvard for 6 weeks to gain a greater global business perspective, and to learn how to broaden growth and sustain their own competitive advantage at their respective corporations.

You can imagine an intense "8 to 5" curriculum for these "students", so Carl had to shoot in the evenings after classes.  Though mentally exhausted after their day, everyone was very comfortable in Carl's presence and enjoyed "being themselves" in front of the camera.

Carl will be shooting a 3rd series of ads in January, hoping to meet more executives from the far corners of the world, and speak to a few in his native language of French!

Jonathan Chapman and the very "fashionable" Emma Berg

Jonathan recently had the privilege to work with fashion designer Emma Berg, shooting stills and a  a motion piece showcasing her Fall / Winter 2012 creative collection.  Jonathan & team partnered with stylist Grant Whittaker who describes himself as a “Fashion and Creative Catalyst.”   It was a great opportunity with unique challenges; the type of project we are always on the lookout for as we work to refine and expand upon our visual experiences.

We paired up Emma’s fashions with two models amid various Minneapolis locations ranging from the Ritz Theater to Harriet Island.  The stark, muted environments provided a welcome contrast to the vibrant colors of Emma’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection.  The backgrounds also highlight her sense of “sophisticated whimsy with dark undertones” - a common theme in Emma’s fashion work.

"My ideal as a designer is to appeal to the woman who is driven by the creative side of life or at least has a strong appreciation for it." -Emma Berg

Eric Kiel - Problem Solved....

We love repeat clients and feel very fortunate to shoot the Winter 2012 stills & video campaign again for Koppen Outdoor.

Originally set to shoot in Argentina, the production had to be moved to Whistler, BC just 2 weeks before the shoot. But the real challenge was capturing all the still & video footage possible in some very dynamic & remote locations.

Shooting with our Canon DSLR & the RED (the most badass piece of digital video on the market), Eric's focus was not just the shot list, but creating a workflow to meet our client’s tight deadline.  With the client, retoucher, editor, and colorist on location with the crew, they were able to pull live frames from each scene on the Red, work in the post-production, then hand them off to the colorist to create & compliment the stills.  This saved a ton of editing & coloring time, allowing for faster turnaround -- our clients had a finished piece in hand 2 weeks after the shoot wrapped.

Hats off to Producer Extraordinaire Hilary for a seamless production.  See more behind the scenes photos in Eric's blog post,  or view the campaign at KIELPHOTO.COM

Mark Katzman - I'll Have What She's Having

Mark's been very happy lately, having fun on production & shooting happy people. I'll have what this lady's having........:-)

View the video here.

There's a saying, "If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life."
Doesn't seem like Mark's working here, but he is.  On assignment for Draftfcb, Mark had the pleasure of photographing five ‘Ambassadors’ representing patients suffering from MS. These people were amazing – happy, energetic and great spirited, even through some inclement weather.

A big thanks to a great crew!  See more at www.markkatzman.com

Jeffrey Lemont Brown/Tallgrass Pictures New Reel!

Its Here!!  We’ve been long awaiting and now ecstatically present to you…for your viewing pleasure…our brand new showreel!!

Eric Schmidt - Authenticity, Stampedes, & New Work

Authenticity is a word that has been associated with Eric's work and is also a word he feels that most people would want to be associated with.  So when a recent assignment asked him to create authentic moments of individuals being portrayed as patients and doctors, he jumped onboard.

Shooting both stills & motion, Eric used thoughtful words throughout the shoot to gently direct & create those moments of authenticity.  Read more in his journal Capturing Moments.

While healthcare assignments make up a large portion of Eric's work, he still finds time to photograph other interests, like Rodeo's & State Fairs.  If you've never been to either, put them on your bucket list!

Traveling to Montana, he took his 8x10 view camera to photograph the Marias stampede.

While waiting for the action, storm clouds moved in, and as luck would have it - lightening struck.  No photoshop here :-)

The Montana & County Fair galleries are new to Eric site's. See more people and places at ericschmidtphotography.com.

Oh, to be a kid again!
